Fertilizing Tallahassee Lawns: Time for Spring Treatment

At the height of Tallahassee and North Florida’s summer heat, homeowners ask: “What can we do to save our lawns?” Keeping a lawn in tip-top shape can be a big job, but hiring a professional lawn care company relieves homeowners of the burden of maintaining the lawn and frees them up to enjoy more leisure time with their friends and family.  Here are some techniques that Tallahassee Lawn Services uses to fertilize lawns:

Having your lawn fertilized

I fertilize lawns a couple of times a year, once in the spring and then again in midsummer with a food specially blended for Tallahassee lawns. You’ll find these blends higher in nitrogen than other elements (the first number in a series of numbers on the fertilizer bag). Nitrogen is what stimulates vigorous growth and deep green color.

I fertilize only a couple of times a year because I discovered that applying the feed more often meant too much growth and unnecessary costs to the homeowner. So, by reducing the amount of fertilizer, I’m able to provide my clients with a vibrant lawn while saving them money

Deep Watering Twice Weekly

I advise homeowners that it is best to water your lawn early morning, preferably between 7 and 8 a.m. This lets the lawn dry before nightfall, when harmful fungi are most active. It’s also much better to water heavily only a couple of times a week than to water lightly more often. The deep soaking encourages deep root growth, whereas light watering encourages the roots to stay close to the surface of the soil, making your lawn more susceptible to heat and drought.Tallahassee lawns watering lawn care

Another thing to keep in mind is that an actively growing lawn this time of year will require about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week. This of course will depend on your soil type.  Lawns can be a source of pride — just don’t let the summer heat get the most of it, and you.

According to Audubon.org, the average homeowner spends roughly 40 hours mowing their lawn each year, and Americans spend $8.5 billion on lawn care products and equipment. Lawns are a major part of the gardening scene, with millions of acres in this country alone. Tallahassee Lawn Services saves homeowners the expense of maintaining equipment and offers them freedom in their busy schedules.
